3. After the Watergate scandal, Congress passed the Federal Elections Campaign Act of 1971 to regulate campaign funding and financing. Then in 1976, in the case of Buckley v. Valeo, a majority of justices on the Supreme Court ruled that the law limiting campaign funding was an unconstitutional violation of freedom of speech. The majority of the Court has continued to hold this position which was most recently validated in the Citizens United case. What have been the consequences of these Court rulings? What fundamental democratic principles, values, and norms are relevant to taking a position on issues raised by the Court’s position? What position do you take on this issue? Explain your position.
