Youth Safety and Civility Alliance
by Patience LeBlanc - My friend Debbie Keen, a high school law teacher in Dallas, Texas, created a non-profit organization called Youth Safety and Civility Alliance. The goal of the organization is to "build tools and the relationships to most effectively reach and teach the next generation" the practice of civility. Her website states, the group is "Training young people (and the adults who work with them) to promote strategies in: safety & situational awareness, conflict resolution, civil discourse, deescalation, and community building.
Over the last several months, I have watched this group attend city council meetings, volunteer at polling places, and hand out books promoting neighborhood safety to elementary students. It is wonderful to watch young people discuss politics and promote civility.
